Surfactant
A cleansing molecule that has both water-attracting and oil-attracting properties. In shampoo, surfactants lift oils and dirt from the scalp so they can be rinsed away.
Silicone (e.g. dimethicone)
A synthetic polymer that coats the hair shaft to reduce friction, add shine, and improve manageability. It does not penetrate the hair — it forms a surface layer.
Preservative
An ingredient added to prevent bacterial, fungal, or mold growth inside a water-based formula. Without preservatives, most shampoos would spoil quickly.
pH adjuster
An acid or base added in small amounts to bring the formula's pH into a range that is compatible with the scalp and hair, typically between 4.5 and 5.5.
Quaternary ammonium compound (quat)

Surfactants — the cleansers

Preservatives
Water-based formulas are prone to microbial growth. Preservatives like phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate prevent bacteria and mold from developing in the bottle. Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben) were once standard but have become less common as brands have responded to consumer preference — though major regulatory bodies continue to evaluate their safety on an ongoing basis.
Thickeners and texture agents
Ingredients like sodium chloride (plain salt) and carbomer adjust viscosity so the shampoo pours and lathers in a way that feels satisfying to use. They don't clean or condition — they're mostly about the sensory experience.
pH adjusters
Hair and scalp have a slightly acidic pH (roughly 4.5–5.5). Formulators use ingredients like citric acid or sodium hydroxide in small amounts to keep the shampoo's pH in a range that doesn't disrupt the scalp's natural environment. This matters for scalp health more than most people realize.
Specialty Ingredients Worth Knowing
Beyond the core functional ingredients, many shampoos include additives targeting specific concerns:

- Keratin hydrolysates — broken-down proteins that can temporarily fill in damaged areas of the hair shaft, improving the appearance of strength and smoothness.
- Panthenol (provitamin B5) — attracts moisture and may improve hair's elasticity and feel when used regularly.
- Fragrances and essential oils — added entirely for scent. Some individuals with sensitive scalps find synthetic fragrances irritating; fragrance-free options exist for this reason.
It's worth noting that many "active" ingredients in rinse-off products like shampoo have limited contact time with the scalp or strands. The actual benefit delivered can vary considerably from what's implied on the front of the bottle. How you wash matters just as much as what you wash with.
